The 'Malay' or 'Melayu' race must have has existed even before the inter continental drift era. The common identifier is definitely the 'Malay Language' itself as spoken across the Malay
Archipilago and totally different from Chinese, Tamil, Arabic, etc etc. Some of the root words such as ANAK for baby ,AYAM or MANOK for chicken, ORANG for humankind, HUTAN for jungle etc are used in Malaya, Borneo, Philipines, Cambodia etc.
